Your Skin's Little Ecosystem
With all that the beauty industry throws at us, it is easy to forget this important fact: your skin is your largest organ, and deserves the same loving care as your heart, lungs, and liver. In fact, your skin is a critical immune system organ because it is your first line of defense against viruses and environmental toxins.
But did you know that just like your gut, your skin is home to millions of bacteria? Most of the bacteria is harmless, and even beneficial to your skin's health. And just like your gut, your diverse skin bacteria (also known as your skin's microbiome) is controlled by your immune system.
Microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, and fungi) and mites (tiny, eight-legged arachnids!) cover the surface of your skin and also live deep in your hair follicles and glands.

What Happens in an Imbalanced Microbiome
Together, these little critters all form a community, an ecosystem, where they are co-dependent. As long as this community stays in balance, your skin maintains good health. If your skin's environment changes, then one microorganism may take the opportunity to overpopulate, which can wreak havoc on your skin. This imbalanced microbiome is known as "dysbiosis." Dysbiosis leads to common issues like rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
Rosacea is often from an overgrowth of Demodex mites, and a higher abundance of certain skin bacteria, as well as an imbalanced gut.

Both eczema and psoriasis again is linked to imbalance of microbes in the gut and skin which can trigger an abnormal immune response and compromise the skin barrier. Research shows that a microbiome with less diversity can lead to an increase in certain bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, which can crowd out some of the beneficial bacteria.

Acne is also linked to a disruption in the skin barrier function, inflammation, and imbalanced hormones all of which can be tied back to skin and gut microbiome imbalance.
See a pattern? Balance is everything when it comes to gut and skin health!

1-Week Skin Microbiome Reset Protocol
Day 1–2: Strip Back + Soothe
Stop all exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs, retinoids, scrubs).
Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser once daily (evening only).
Apply a barrier-repair moisturizer with ceramides + fatty acids.
Avoid makeup if possible.
Day 3–4: Reintroduce Balance
Add a hydrating toner or essence with prebiotics/probiotics (like lactobacillus ferment).
Continue gentle cleansing + barrier moisturizer.
Keep hands off your face; avoid picking.
Day 5–6: Strengthen the Barrier
Add a simple hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid or peptides).
Use a non-nano mineral SPF every morning.
Keep sugar + dairy low to reduce inflammation.
Day 7: Microbiome Nourishment
Do a single calming mask: oat, honey, or aloe-based.
Continue minimal routine (cleanse → hydrate → moisturize → SPF).
Replace your pillowcase + sanitize phone.
Keep in mind, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to skincare, but the above basic protocol can help most people regain balance.
